In his youth, Marco had worked with his father on his family’s farm near the city of Marsala. But his obsession with cars and his need for speed proved too strong, leading to his first career as a professional racecar driver. By the end of this race, however, Marco was ready to turn the page. Looking back at his childhood, he felt deep sadness that Marsala’s ancient proud tradition had sunk so low. He decided he wanted to change this. First, Marco rebuilt his family’s old cellar on his mother’s farm in the Samperi area. Then he searched everywhere for old Grillo solera barrels from the local contadini.
Description: Dry, crisp, and energetic, with a beautiful balance of fresh acidity and a lightly creamy texture, white flowers, fennel seed and a light salty touch
Pairs well with: Grilled octopus with orange, fennel, and olive oil, ricotta-filled ravioli, sea bass tartare with green apple
Fun fact: Marco de Bartoli wasn't always a winemaker; he began his career as a racecar driver but returned to the family estate in Samperi near Marsala in the 1970s to dedicate himself entirely to wine
