A special story from Alicante. According to Felipé Gutierrez de la Vega, Alicante was once the leading region for sweet wines (Fondillón) in Europe (around 1850). According to Felipé, these were unfortified wines with a natural alcohol content of around 15%. He didn't quite see eye to eye with the Alicante D.O and decided in 2010, in consultation with his daughter Violetta, to leave the D.O. Violetta, trained in France, has recently decided not to interrupt fermentation by using sulfites, but by lightly fortifying the wines with alcohol.
Description: Dried sweet citrus, lavender, honey, apricot, intense yet very refined sweetness, fine acidity.
Pairs well with: Fresh and fruity desserts, tarts.
Fun fact: The dry summers of recent years have led to a loss in harvest volume of up to 25%. All grapes here (Monastrell and Moscatell) are picked overripe so they can dry on the vine, a risk that can lead to extremely small harvests in dry years.
