Alfredo Arribas is an architect by profession — he designed his own winery, Clos del Portal in Priorat, as a sculpture of Corten steel and natural stone. His childhood memories with his grandfather, a winemaker in Ribera del Duero, led him in 2001 to this sprawling 40-hectare estate near the village of El Lloar. What he found were neglected terraces with old vineyards — Garnacha and Cariñena, some more than a hundred years old, rooted in the dark llicorella slate of Priorat. The Negre de Negres is the most approachable and candid wine from the estate: a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah, aged for 12 months in French oak. Organically and biodynamically grown.
Description: Dark cherry red with aromas of ripe plum, blackberries, wild herbs, thyme, and a cool mineral undertone of slate. Velvety, juicy and balanced, with vibrant acidity and a long finish with hints of spices and licorice.
Pairs well with: Grilled red meat, game dishes, aged cheeses or a lamb stew.
Fun fact: Alfredo Arribas had his Priorat winery custom-designed — by himself, as an architect. He decided to make wine there *after* construction.
